📰News

🚧 The City of Fort Wayne is moving forward with plans for a $29 million railroad overpass on Airport Expressway between Ardmore Avenue and Bluffton Road, despite delays in federal funding. The project, largely supported by a $23.2 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant, was delayed after administrative reviews but is expected to be finalized within a month. City Engineer Patrick Zaharako said the project remains on schedule, with bids expected in late 2027 or early 2028 and completion targeted for 2029. Norfolk Southern has resurfaced the current crossing in the meantime, and a public design meeting will be held in 2026. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏫 Allen County schools have been awarded $849,000 through Indiana’s Secured School Safety Program for security upgrades. Since 2013, the program has invested more than $214 million statewide. Local schools receiving grants include Bishop Dwenger, Bishop Luers, Blackhawk Christian, East Allen, Fort Wayne Community Schools, Southwest Allen, Northwest Allen, and several Catholic schools. Funding can go toward resource officers, technology, warning systems, threat assessments, and support services. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚚 A semi plowed into vehicles stopped for construction Wednesday afternoon on U.S. 20 near CR 350W in LaGrange County. Investigators said the truck hit a Chrysler SUV, pushing it into motorcyclist David Zinke of LaGrange, who was airlifted to Fort Wayne and later pronounced dead. The SUV was also pushed into oncoming traffic, colliding with a pickup. The Kia and Chrysler drivers were treated and released from the hospital. The crash remains under investigation. 🏠 St. Joseph Missions, a Fort Wayne shelter serving single women, is calling for a community-wide effort to address homelessness. Executive Director Erin Ness said the issue is complex and cannot be solved by one group alone. She highlighted the need for low-barrier shelters, noting the shelter receives about 172 calls a month from women seeking help. City Council members and local advocates remain divided between enforcement and providing resources, but Ness urged collaboration across government, nonprofits, and individuals. She also credited Mayor Sharon Tucker for prioritizing homelessness solutions. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🎨 Electric Works leaders unveiled new housing and art as part of their plan to create an “all-inclusive” innovation campus in Fort Wayne. A new 15,000-square-foot mural, Echoes of the Future, now covers the Union Parking Garage the largest mural in the city. Next door, The Elex apartment complex is opening in phases, with one building’s 75 units ready for move-in. Currently reserved for people 55 and older, units start at $1111 with utilities included and some designed for residents with disabilities. A second building, open to all ages and incomes, will be completed in December. In total, The Elex will provide 296 apartments. Read more from WANE 15 here.

👟 The Heller family of Fort Wayne is gearing up for their fourth Fort4Fitness 10K, with three generations running together. Mark Heller began the tradition in 2021 to stay healthy after concerns about Alzheimer’s in his family, and now runs alongside his wife, children, and grandchildren. Even the youngest, 5-year-old Hudson, plans to run part of the race before hopping in the stroller. Nine-year-old Isabelle and seven-year-old Charlotte have already completed the 10K. The family says running keeps them healthy, connected, and motivated. Read more from WANE 15 here.

📚 The Allen County Public Library is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with new programs running September 15–October 15. Families can now choose English/Spanish bilingual books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age five. ACPL also launched “Cultural Connection,” a new website offering programming, partnerships, and resources for non-English speakers. Read more from WANE 15 here.

💙 Bishop Dwenger student Trason Fish is preparing to travel to Germany for life-saving brain surgery after his arteriovenous malformation (AVM) grew back 10 years after his first treatment. He first survived a rupture at age seven, which left him unconscious for two weeks and relearning basic skills. His surgery is scheduled for November 14, and a GoFundMe has been started that has raised over $73,000 to support his family. Read more from WANE 15 here.
