📰News

Protesters gathered Saturday outside the Allen County Memorial Coliseum during “Operation: ICE Breaker” to oppose a hiring event inside. Organizers from Indivisible Northeast Indiana held signs reading messages like “Hands off our neighbors” and “ICE is not welcome in Fort Wayne.” Event organizers clarified the hiring was for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, not ICE, though protesters expressed concern about coordination between the two agencies. 🚗 A woman from Roanoke won a brand new Chevy Silverado during Saturday night’s TinCaps game. Lassus Bros. marked their 100th anniversary by giving away the truck after more than two years of planning and 10 months of events. Out of 30,000 entries and twelve finalists, Kimberly Payne was the lucky winner. She said she planned to drive it home and then sit in it to figure out how everything works. 🏬 Glenbrook Square, northeast Indiana’s largest shopping center, has a new owner. Hull Property Group announced Friday it acquired the mall on Coliseum Boulevard. Originally opened in 1966, the mall has space for more than 100 retailers and has changed hands several times, most recently in 2022. Hull, which owns 36 malls across 17 states, said it specializes in revitalizing regional malls and plans to work with community leaders to ensure Glenbrook remains a key destination. 🌿 Google has requested to build on 2.5 acres of protected wetland at its $2 billion data center site in southeast Fort Wayne. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has not yet issued a permit, which requires mitigation such as protecting or creating wetlands elsewhere. Experts say the wetland could hold about 1 million gallons of rainwater, and filling it may increase flooding risks. Public comments are open until Sept. 11. For questions or to submit comments, individuals can contact Evan White, IDEM Project Manager, via email at [email protected] or by phone at 317-671-6698. Written comments can also be mailed to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management office in Indianapolis. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🪰 Spotted lanternflies have established populations across Northeast Indiana and are spreading to other parts of the state. New populations were recently confirmed in Dearborn, Ripley, and Lake counties, bringing the total to 17 affected counties. The Indiana DNR has treated over 1,000 trees of heaven with insecticides and removed egg masses to slow growth. Residents are encouraged to report sightings with photos, location, and county to [email protected] or call 866-NO-EXOTIC. Read more from WFFT here.

The incident happened during a fight, leaving three people injured and transported to the hospital. Their conditions are not yet known. Multiple Fort Wayne Police vehicles and an ambulance were at the scene. Read more from WANE 15 here.
