✈️ Honor Flight Northeast Indiana launched its 52nd flight on September 10, carrying 81 veterans from Northeast Indiana and Ohio, including World War II, Korean, and Vietnam era veterans. The free trip takes veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit monuments dedicated to their service. The public is invited to welcome them home at Fort Wayne International Airport at 8:00 p.m., with parking in Long Term Parking. Two more flights are scheduled for October 8 and November 5. Veterans can sign up here. Read more from WANE 15 here.
⚾ Parkview Field, home of the Fort Wayne TinCaps, was ranked the No. 1 minor league ballpark by Stadium Journey with a 4.71 out of 5 “Fanfare” rating. The ranking considered seven categories, with Parkview earning perfect scores in five: Atmosphere, Food & Beverage, Fans, Return on Investment, and Extras. The TinCaps also finished 3rd in attendance out of 60 High-A/Single-A teams at the end of the 2025 season. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏥 The Department of Veterans Affairs is providing additional funding this fiscal year to improve infrastructure at VA facilities. Fort Wayne will receive upgrades including a new fire alarm system and a remodel of Building 5, while Marion will see renovations to Building 16, sewer and water improvements, and a cooling tower upgrade. VA Secretary Doug Collins said these improvements enhance care for veterans. Total Non-Recurring Maintenance spending for 2025 is $2.8 billion, an $800 million increase from last year. 🏘️ Fort Wayne’s Homeless Services Manager Amanda Fall told City Council that an estimated 2,250 people are unhoused, outlining goals to reduce homelessness, improve services, and coordinate encampment strategies. Current efforts include affordable housing projects, new shelter plans, and an Encampment Task Force. Council President Russ Jehl stressed enforcement over aid, while advocate Sally Segerson argued essentials keep people alive until change is possible. Both agreed compromise is needed. 🗳️ Democratic Representatives Phil GiaQuinta and Kyle Miller hosted a Fort Wayne town hall opposing mid-decade redistricting, calling it a political power grab and waste of taxpayer money, with Miller warning it could cost $250,000 for a special election. Both argued it undermines democracy, while attendees voiced concerns over voter suppression and costs. Allen County GOP Chair Steve Shine countered that stances on redistricting depend on which party controls the legislature. No special session or new maps have been announced. 🏙️ The City of Fort Wayne canceled the September 15 Neighborhood Presidents’ meeting due to its closeness to the Inspire Neighborhoods Conference on September 12. The next meeting is set for December 1 at 6 p.m. at Citizens Square, with speakers from the League’s Inclusion Institute, Indiana Michigan Power, and FORTify program graduates, and will also stream live on Facebook. Neighborhood leaders are encouraged to register at fortwayneneighborhoods.org for updates and grant opportunities. Read more from WFFT here.
⚖️ The City of Fort Wayne and three Fort Wayne Police Department officers have formally responded to a wrongful death lawsuit filed six months after 66-year-old Patricia Hepworth was shot and killed by police at a hotel in January. The lawsuit alleges officers threw a flashbang, failed to issue commands, shot Hepworth at close range, acted “jovial,” and provided no life-saving measures. Officers denied these claims, admitting only that they fired a weapon, took Hepworth to the hospital where she later died, and stated they acted within the scope of their employment, in good faith, and used objectively reasonable force.
