🚧 Engle Road in southwest Fort Wayne is closed for emergency railroad track repairs between Ardmore Avenue and Bluffton Road. The closure, beginning Tuesday, affects access to Kekionga Middle School. Norfolk Southern is performing the repairs, which are expected to last until the end of day September 17. Recommended detours include Ardmore Avenue to Nuttman Avenue, Brooklyn Avenue, and Bluffton Road or neighborhood routes off Sand Point Road or Wawonaissa Trail. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🐣 The Fort Wayne Zoo welcomed its first successful wattled crane hatch on August 29, born to 8-year-old mother Starling and 23-year-old father Hannibal. The chick’s name and sex will be revealed later. Wattled cranes are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Zoo officials said the parents are attentive, and the chick is already foraging in its habitat. Visitors may spot it blending into tall grasses. The zoo participates in the Wattled Crane Species Survival Plan to support conservation and genetic diversity. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🧬 Parkview Health has opened its DNA Insights genetic screening program to the public. The free program, previously limited to Parkview patients and staff, is now available to anyone 18 or older with a Parkview MyChart account. Participants complete an online consent form, visit a Parkview lab for a blood draw, and receive no-cost genetic screening for hereditary cancers, high cholesterol risk, and select traits such as caffeine sensitivity and sleep patterns. Roughly 1-2% of participants are expected to have a genetic variant that may put them at risk. Those who test positive are offered free counseling with a Parkview genetic counselor. Parkview aims to enroll 100,000 participants over the coming years as part of its partnership with the Helix Research Network. Insurance is not required to join. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏈 An Indianapolis law firm is investigating claims that multiple Snider High School football players suffered heat-related health issues during practices and a scrimmage in early August when temperatures were around 90 degrees. Nineteen players were alleged to have been hospitalized following an August 9 scrimmage, according to CohenMalad Trial Lawyers. Fort Wayne Community Schools acknowledged that some students became ill with similar symptoms but said Snider followed proper heat protocols. The law firm alleges players were forced to train in full gear without adequate breaks, shade, or water. FWCS has been contacted for further comment. Read more from WANE 15 here.
