📰News

🍂Neighborlink has launched its annual leaf-raking volunteer project, one of the Christian nonprofit’s biggest seasonal efforts. The group, led by Executive Director Shawn DeBaar, receives hundreds of requests each fall, mostly from older adults or people with disabilities needing yard help. With over 900 current service requests, volunteers are already at work across Fort Wayne, helping neighbors while building friendships and community. Those interested in volunteering or requesting help can sign up online. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🩸 The American Red Cross is urging donors to give blood or platelets this month to help maintain a steady supply for patients. Donation rates often drop in October as people shift into fall routines and hurricane season disrupts collections. Donors who give by Oct. 19 will receive a $10 Amazon gift card, while those donating between Oct. 20 and Nov. 16 will get a $10 e-gift card and a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. Appointments can be made at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. Read more from WOWO here.

♻️ Got old electronics lying around? Turn your clutter into a cause at the Parkview YMCA’s Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, October 11, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Residents can safely dispose of old devices while supporting the YMCA’s Teen Program, which funds leadership and mentorship opportunities for local youth. Items accepted include phones, laptops, TVs, chargers, game consoles, and “anything that plugs in or takes batteries.” Fees range from $2 for small electronics to $30 for large TVs. No registration is required, and volunteers will assist with drop-offs. Read more from WOWO here.

🎀Lyndsey Williams discovered she had invasive ductal carcinoma after a routine mammogram at age 40 revealed an abnormal lymph node. Following chemotherapy, radiation, and ongoing medication, she now shows no signs of disease and continues to support breast cancer causes. Medical experts stress that early detection through regular screenings can save lives, urging women to know their bodies, ask questions, and schedule mammograms even with busy schedules. Evening and weekend appointments are available through the Dupont Center for Breast Health. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🐾 An online petition with more than 700 signatures is calling for Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control to change how it handles wildlife calls. The petition claims animals are often euthanized without evaluation by a wildlife professional. Kristen Werling of Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation said experts like hers should be involved in assessments. The petition followed an incident involving a sick fox that was euthanized on Sept. 30. Director Amy-Jo Sites said the agency prioritizes public safety and must follow city ordinances when dealing with sick or potentially rabid animals. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🔋 The Fort Wayne Fire Department and the Allen County Department of Environmental Management are reminding residents to properly store and dispose of lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires. Officials say these batteries, found in devices like phones and tools, should never go in trash or recycling bins. Instead, they should be taped and dropped off at designated facilities. The agencies are hosting a TOX Saturday event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for residents to safely dispose of up to 60 pounds of hazardous materials. Read more from WANE 15 here.

⚖️ One of three teenagers accused in a Fort Wayne home invasion has pleaded guilty. Seventeen-year-old Ka Pyai admitted to a Level 5 felony robbery charge after breaking into an apartment with two others in January, stealing valuables, and threatening a child with a gun. Police later found the stolen car in Sidney, Ohio, with Pyai and the other suspects inside. The plea deal drops a more serious armed robbery charge. The two remaining suspects, Okyar Woe and Dayda Woe, will appear in court later. Read more from WANE 15 here.
