📰News

🍲 Food Not Bombs Fort Wayne criticized the Fort Wayne Police Department for making arrests during its weekly Sunday meal shares at Freimann Square. The nonprofit, which has served free meals for 15 years, claims police are using their events to target individuals with active warrants citing a recent arrest where officers detained a man face down on the curb. FWPD stated officers acted on a valid warrant for probation violation and emphasized they’re legally required to execute such orders. Organizers say the arrests are deterring vulnerable residents from attending and are considering relocating. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏠 Habitat for Humanity of Greater Fort Wayne began its 2025–26 building season Wednesday with construction on the first of two new homes in Huntington. The first, called the Triumph, features three bedrooms and two bathrooms across 1,170 sq. ft. A second home: The Charlotte, will be Habitat’s first-ever two-story home in Huntington County. Construction Coordinator Mike Kuker praised volunteers for their essential role in each build, noting Habitat’s mission to help families secure affordable mortgages. Interested volunteers can sign up on the Habitat for Humanity website.

💊 Mayor Sharon Tucker announced $1.002 million in opioid settlement funds to support addiction recovery, prevention, and treatment services across Fort Wayne. The funding will aid local organizations like YWCA Northeast Indiana, BHG Fort Wayne Treatment Center, and Rise Recovery, LLC, expanding programs such as medication-assisted treatment and transitional housing. The city will continue receiving settlement payments through 2038. Mayor Tucker said the investment reflects her commitment to improving quality of life and addressing substance use challenges. 🚧 Fort Wayne City Council approved the Southeast Corridors Planning Study to evaluate and improve about 8.9 miles of roadway, including S. Anthony Boulevard, Paulding Road, and Tillman Road. The $868,579 planning phase is fully funded by a federal USDOT RAISE Grant, requiring no local tax dollars. The study will focus on traffic safety, sidewalks, bike access, and redevelopment opportunities in neighborhoods long overdue for reinvestment. Work begins in late 2025 and will take about a year, with construction likely phased over five to ten years. Read more from WANE 15 here.

💧 Fort Wayne City Utilities celebrated the completion of its Long-Term Control Plan Wednesday, concluding an 18-year effort that began nearly three decades ago. The initiative, spanning four mayoral administrations, aimed to protect Fort Wayne’s rivers and neighborhoods by reducing sewage overflow and improving infrastructure. Key projects included neighborhood upgrades and the Deep Rock Tunnel nicknamed “MamaJo.” The plan achieved a 90% reduction in river overflows, protected 45,000 homes, and kept 2 billion gallons of pollution out of the city’s waterways. City Utilities’ Frank Suarez credited community collaboration for the project’s success. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🔥 Firefighters responded to a large blaze Wednesday night at BTE Storage on the 2200 block of Broadway, southwest of downtown Fort Wayne. The Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived around 8 p.m. after reports of a brush fire near the railroad tracks. Flames spread quickly from the wooded area to several storage units, prompting crews to call for backup and shut down Broadway to connect hoses to hydrants.
