📰News
🏡 Fort Wayne launched the A Lot To Love program to turn vacant city-owned lots into affordable housing. The initiative partners with small-scale developers to build new homes and revitalize neighborhoods. The pilot phase began in March with 29 lots offered at reduced prices, some as low as $850 for land valued up to $15,000. Construction is underway on two homes, with prices starting around $190,000. City officials plan to expand the program to over 200 vacant lots in the future. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🪖 U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth will visit Fort Wayne for the fourth annual Northeast Indiana Defense Summit, hosted by Senator Jim Banks. The two-day event runs November 11–12, with sessions at The Pearl Event Center and Purdue University Fort Wayne. The summit aims to strengthen Indiana’s role in national defense by bringing together policymakers, industry experts, and economic leaders. Read more from WANE 15 here.
💰 Fort Wayne officials have scrapped plans to build an $800,000 interstate “Gateway Sign” after public backlash. Mayor Sharon Tucker requested the funds be repurposed for the city’s “A Lot to Love” housing program. City Council President Russ Jehl agreed the sign was a “want, not a need” and suggested redirecting the money to the Southeast Strategy Plan, which recently faced budget cuts. However, council cannot reallocate funds directly and must wait for a new proposal from the mayor. Tucker later confirmed the funds would support both “A Lot to Love” and the Southeast Implementation Strategy. Read more from WANE 15 here.
💵 Allen County Treasurer Samantha Chenery reminds residents that fall property taxes are due Monday, November 10. Payments must be received or postmarked by the deadline to avoid penalties. Bills can be printed from the Treasurer’s website, and payments can be made online, by phone at 844-576-2177, or in person at the Rousseau Centre. A payment kiosk is available until 5:30 p.m. for cash and check payments. Read more from WFFT here.
🇺🇸 Honor Flight Northeast Indiana is sending more than 80 veterans from the Korean War, Cold War, and Vietnam War to Washington D.C. for its final flight of 2025. Over 4,000 local veterans have participated in the program, which honors their service with visits to national memorials. The public is invited to welcome the veterans home at Fort Wayne International Airport at 8 p.m. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🎶 The Carroll High School Charger Pride marching band will perform a community show on Thursday, November 6, at the Carroll High stadium. 🦓 Students at the Amp Lab at Electric Works partnered with the Fort Wayne Zoo to design a possible new animal exhibit. About 50 students worked on the project, focusing on everything from marketing and signage to animal care needs and construction budgets. The zoo provided real parameters, including budget limits and potential animal options. Students presented progress every two weeks and refined their designs with zoo feedback. Their creative ideas impressed zoo leaders and helped students gain hands-on career experience in architecture, carpentry, and design. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚨 Fort Wayne Police are investigating a train crash that happened Tuesday evening near Coliseum Boulevard and Reynolds Street on the city’s east side. Details remain limited as the investigation continues. Read more from WANE 15 here.
