📰News
🏘️ Fort Wayne and Allen County planners are working on a zoning amendment for cottage courtyard, or pocket neighborhoods, as part of an initiative to increase housing inventory and affordability. Pocket neighborhoods are small clusters of homes around shared open spaces, encouraging sociability with features like front porches and rear parking. Experts note these neighborhoods can boost community and resilience if designed with privacy in mind. The approach is similar to Indianapolis’ 2021 cottage courtyard amendment. 🏛️ The Freeland Estate, now known as The Hamilton, has opened an auction featuring more than 600 items collected over decades. The sale runs through December 15 and includes fine art, décor, porcelain, crystal, collectibles, furniture, oversized décor, kitchenware, lighting, and unique pieces. Organizers say this is the first of several planned auctions. The launch comes shortly after the mansion went under contract for $6.75 million, though the sale is not final until closing. 🎰 Greater Fort Wayne has launched a new advertising push “Fort Wayne First” aimed at rallying public support for bringing a casino to the city. Organizers argue the project could boost economic growth through job creation, small-business partnerships, increased tax revenue, and tourism. The effort follows a recent state-funded report listing Auburn as a top casino location after an earlier New Haven proposal was blocked. Mayor Sharon Tucker’s office has not yet commented. 🌐 Indiana Connectivity is accepting applications from rural homes and businesses until Sunday, December 7, to help offset costs of expanding internet coverage in remote areas. Grant awards to providers are announced every three months. For those interested in applying, check out this link. Read more from WTHI here.
🐾 The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a sharp rise in online pet scams, with fraudulent sellers using fake websites, stolen photos, and pressure tactics to steal millions from buyers nationwide. A new BBB study shows pet scams now make up nearly 18% of all online shopping fraud, with average losses around $850 and rising. Scammers often demand untraceable payments and pile on fake “shipping” fees before victims realize the pet doesn’t exist. BBB leaders urge shoppers to verify pets via live video, avoid wire transfers or gift cards, and stay cautious of “free” or heavily discounted purebred animals. They also recommend adopting from reputable local shelters. Read more from WOWO here.
🕵️ The Fort Wayne Police Department issued a statewide Silver Alert for 15-year-old Aliyah DiFilippo, last seen near the 5200 block of S Harrison Street or S Calhoun Street and Fairfax Avenue. She is 5 feet tall, 110 pounds, Hispanic, with brown hair, brown eyes, and dental braces, wearing a black tank top, black and red pajama pants, earrings, and possibly carrying a blanket. Police ask anyone with information to call 260-427-1222. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🔫 A 30-year-old Fort Wayne man, Tyshawn Morris, was sentenced to 65 years in prison for a June 2024 shooting that killed 32-year-old Ryan Patrick Harding and injured another man during a watch party on Melan Cove. Morris pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder as part of a plea deal. Court documents show the incident began as an argument, with Morris claiming he fired in reaction after being punched, while the surviving victim said Morris pulled a gun first. Morris later turned himself in. Read more from 21Alive here.
🚧 Allen County officials report that construction on the new jail at Meyer Road is now about 35% complete, with 430 of 700 prefabricated cells already set in place. Interior masonry is roughly 25% finished, and 80% of the concrete slab has been poured. The facility will replace the downtown jail that has operated since 1981 and remains on schedule for a December 2027 completion. Monthly progress videos are being shared by Weigand Construction as the project moves forward. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏒 The Komets wrapped up a grueling three-games-in-three-nights stretch with a 2–1 loss to the Wichita Thunder on Sunday at the Memorial Coliseum. Wichita capitalized on two 4-on-4 chances in the second period, with Ryan Finnegan scoring both goals. Captain Alex Aleardi cut the deficit in the third, but despite firing an incredible 55 shots on goal, Fort Wayne couldn’t find the equalizer against standout Thunder goalie Matt Davis. The Komets head to Kalamazoo next as they continue a heavy 7-games-in-10-days run, returning home on Thanksgiving for the annual Bob Chase Memorial Game. Read more from WANE 15 here.
