Supreme Court Battle Over Birthright Citizenship Could Create Chaos
• The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship, raising questions about how newborns’ status would be documented.
• Justice Kavanaugh questioned whether hospitals, states, and federal agencies could handle proving citizenship if birth certificates were no longer enough.
• Critics warn the order could fundamentally shift U.S. citizenship from being tied to birthplace to being based on parentage, creating widespread legal and bureaucratic confusion.
• The administration argues the order targets “birth tourism” and cites the UK’s post-1983 system as a precedent, though critics point to difficulties, like the Windrush scandal, as warnings.
Why it matters here:
Families with newborns could face new documentation hurdles for passports, Social Security numbers, and government programs if the order takes effect.
