🌧️The first Lunch on the Square of 2025, scheduled on Thursday, June 5 in downtown Fort Wayne, has been canceled due to weather. The weekly event will continue every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through August 7 at Freimann Square, featuring food trucks and live music. 🔥Fort Wayne’s firefighters union wants a new fire chief, citing staffing issues, rig shutdowns, and too much overtime. A union poll showed 95% lost confidence in Chief Lahey. Mayor Tucker supports Lahey and says both sides are now entering mediation to find a solution. Lahey, who has served as chief since 2015, acknowledged the issues and said he’s improving communication within the department. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🛣️Fort Wayne leaders pushed for a change to Indiana’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, which helps fund road and bridge repairs. The old system capped cities like Fort Wayne at $1.5 million, the same as much smaller towns. The new law allows funding based on road miles, helping large cities get more back. The change could mean millions more for Fort Wayne road work. Read more from WANE 15 here.
👶NEIECC launched Tri-Share+ and Co-Share to help cover childcare costs. Tri-Share+ splits costs between the parent, employer, and state. Co-Share splits costs between employer and employee. The program is for families with kids ages 0–5 and incomes 150%–400% of the federal poverty level. You can apply for this grant on their website, and they will review each family’s eligibility after. Eight companies are participating in the pilot. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚓SWAT and sheriff’s officers surrounded a home on Oliver Street Thursday to serve multiple felony warrants. The standoff began around 10 a.m., and the man surrendered just before 12:45 p.m. without incident. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🕵Allen County Sheriff Troy Hershberger announced the FBI is involved in investigating a violent attack at Pike’s Pub, where several men linked to the Outlaws Motorcycle Club assaulted a Black man. The video shows racial slurs and the beating. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The press conference also covered recent shootings in the area, with leaders asking for community help to solve those cases too. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚨A new scam text pretending to be from the “Indiana Department of Vehicles” is warning users about unpaid traffic tickets and threatening license suspension and fines if they don’t pay immediately. The message includes a suspicious link that looks like an official IN.GOV website but is fake. Officials, including Indiana State Police, confirm this is a scam and urge people not to click links or respond. Instead, verify any ticket directly through official DMV contacts. Be cautious of messages creating fear or urgency. If you get this message, delete it and report it. Read more from WANE 15 here.
