📰News

🚫 Fort Wayne is cracking down on people parking cars on the grass in residential areas. The Department of Neighborhood Code Compliance is adding extra enforcement hours to stop the violation, which breaks a city ordinance and could lead to a $100 daily fine. The city says parking on grass can damage infrastructure, become a fire risk during dry seasons, and create mosquito breeding grounds during wet weather. A pilot program is starting soon to see if this added enforcement works. City Council will get a future report on the results. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🌡️ With hot weather ahead, Fort Wayne is offering several cooling stations through the summer. Locations include the Allen County Public Library, Citilink buses, Inasmuch Ministry, Project.ME, The Rescue Mission, and The Salvation Army. Hours vary by site, and some operate only in extreme heat. More information on cooling stations can be found online here. Read more from WANE 15 here.

💧 Fort Wayne City Utilities has introduced a five-year plan to upgrade water, sewer, and stormwater systems, with projects in more than 200 neighborhoods. The improvements aim to replace old pipes and reduce flooding and backups, especially in areas with aging infrastructure. To fund this work, officials propose annual rate increases through 2029, totaling about $12 more per month for average users. The plan requires approval from both the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission and Fort Wayne City Council. Some increases could take effect by late September or October. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚴 Fort Wayne City Council received an update on trail projects planned across the city and beyond. In 2025, the city will build 3.66 miles of new trails, including the Hannah Street Trail, Anthony Streetscape, Wheelock Road Trail, and continued work on the Pufferbelly Trail. The Poka-Bache Connector still needs 30 miles finished; a federal grant decision is expected June 28. The city also continues progress on the Golden Spike project, which will link 130 miles of trails through a new pedestrian bridge over Coliseum Boulevard. Construction could start next year and finish in late 2026 or early 2027. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🎶 Music on the Plaza returns June 18, July 23, and August 6 at the Main Library Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The first concert, featuring Alicia Pyle & the Locals, will be moved inside to the Main Library Theater due to weather. Rock the Plaza concerts continue Saturdays through July. Read more from WANE 15 here.

📚 ACPL and partners are hosting free Juneteenth programs to educate and celebrate. Events include a 3 p.m. lecture on June 19 at the Main Library, a 4:15 p.m. field trip for teachers, and the “April 1865” exhibit featuring Lincoln’s inkwell. All are free and open to the public; registration encouraged. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🎁 After being paused last holiday season, Toys for Tots is returning to Allen County this year. The program is being revived with support from MidWest America Federal Credit Union and new leadership from Andrea Ainsworth, Assistant VP of Human Resources, who will serve as coordinator. Last year, around 7,000 local families were left without access to the program. Ainsworth said she’s honored to bring back this source of holiday hope and plans to open applications in early November. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏡 ARCH, Fort Wayne’s historic preservation group, is hosting a home and garden tour this Saturday in the Forest Park Neighborhood. The event showcases unique homes and two gardens in a district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the homes were built around 1915 and once belonged to city leaders. The neighborhood features various architectural styles like Tudor Revival, Prairie Style, and Foursquare. The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tickets are available online or in person.
