🛠️ Bridge work on SR 930 and Coliseum Blvd in Fort Wayne will begin on or after July 14 and is expected to take about two weeks, weather permitting. Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution in the work zone. Read more from WANE 15 here.
⛳ Jim Reecer, a longtime golfer and community favorite, spent one of his final days on the course Monday at Colonial Oaks Golf Club after being diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. At 87, he reflected on his lifetime of achievements including two city championships, a state amateur title, and 38 holes-in-one and expressed gratitude for his health, family, and friends. Other golfers on the fairway say that he has always been a great golfer, but an even better person. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏍️ A crash involving a motorcycle, a county truck, and a car caused major traffic jam on Lima Road Tuesday morning near Grove Drive. At least one person was seriously injured. Emergency crews responded quickly to clear debris and restore traffic flow. The cause of the crash is still unknown. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚨 After a July 5 shooting that left a 16-year-old dead and three teens injured, FWPD Chief Scott Caudill called the incident part of a “concerning trend of gun violence involving our youth.” Two suspects ages 16 and 18 have been arrested and charged, including with murder and attempted murder. The FWPD is increasing patrols downtown and urging community engagement to prevent future violence. City leaders also called on parents to be more involved in their children’s lives. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🧠 After a downtown Fort Wayne shooting killed a 16-year-old and injured three others, city officials are seeking solutions. Baltimore’s success with its Comprehensive Violence Prevention Plan which treats violence as a public health issue offers a potential model. The plan relies on community outreach, credible messengers, and intervention strategies that have helped lower homicides and shootings year over year. Fort Wayne leaders agree the answer lies beyond policing, emphasizing the need for parental involvement and community-based support. You can read the full 66-page, 2024 update to the Comprehensive Violence Prevention plan on the city’s website. Read more from WANE 15 here.
