Michigan Parasite Outbreak Tops 1,000 Reported Cases
• Michigan has confirmed 992 cyclospora infections and about 40 hospitalizations, making it the state's largest recorded outbreak, while hundreds of additional cases have been reported in neighboring Ohio.
• Health officials have not identified the source, though the parasite is commonly linked to fresh produce contaminated by feces and causes prolonged watery diarrhea.
• Officials recommend washing produce thoroughly, choosing whole heads of lettuce instead of bagged salad mixes and seeking medical care if diarrhea lasts more than a few days.
Why it matters here:
Foodborne illness outbreaks can spread across multiple states through shared produce supply chains, making food safety recommendations important for consumers everywhere.
