📰News

📅 The City of Fort Wayne announced it will be closed on December 26, even though it was not originally a scheduled holiday. City Council unanimously approved a change allowing the mayor to declare one movable holiday each year to address staffing gaps when many employees take time off. City officials said emergency services will still operate, with employees called in and compensated at holiday pay rates. With the change taking effect immediately, city offices will be closed from December 24 through December 26 for Christmas. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏙️ The City of Fort Wayne is seeking proposals from consulting firms to create a new 10-year downtown plan. The current plan, adopted in 2003, has guided more than $1 billion in downtown investment over the past 22 years, including projects like Parkview Field, Promenade Park, Electric Works, The Landing, and The Bradley. City leaders say the updated plan will help guide future growth and investment. Proposals are due February 2, 2026, with work expected to begin by the end of March 2026 and wrap up within 12 months. 🏗️ Parkview Health has purchased the former movie theater property at 3930 E. Dupont Road for $4.2 million following an auction earlier this year, with the sale finalized in July. The property sits across from Parkview Regional Medical Center and the Mirro Center, and Parkview says it has no immediate plans for the site while it assesses community needs tied to its campus. The land remains commercially zoned (C3), allowing a wide range of business uses, and will continue to be taxed if used for commercial purposes, despite Parkview’s nonprofit status. 📚 The Allen County Public Library is welcoming the public to spend winter break at the library with programs for kids, teens, and families. Activities include extended hours at The Studios to create with high-tech equipment, Crafts for Every Age projects, and free movies at the Main Library. Additional events are listed on the ACPL website. The Main Library and branches will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🔬 Science Central is offering families hands-on fun and learning during winter break. The Countdown to Noon on December 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. features balloon drops at noon and 2 p.m., plus a sensory-friendly option in the Science on a Sphere exhibit. Visitors can also see the final days of the “Eat Well, Play Well” exhibit, which teaches healthy eating and activity. Starting January 4, it will be replaced by “Big Blue Blocks,” where guests can build and crawl through large, lightweight structures. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏛️ Indiana Governor Mike Braun discussed a possible Allen County casino, the future of daycare vouchers, and the state’s ability to power new data centers during a year-end interview. Braun said a casino could involve a local referendum and noted concerns that placing one in downtown Indianapolis could hurt other casinos. He addressed recent daycare voucher cuts tied to the closure of Children’s Village Early Learning Center, saying funding may be restored but likely not before 2027. Braun also explained the challenge of bringing new power generation online fast enough to support growing data centers, including Google’s newly operational Fort Wayne facility.
