📰News

🍴 Lunch on the Square wrapped up its 2025 season on August 7 at Freimann Square. As part of its “Lunch Means More” initiative, 15% of weekly food sales matched by Barnes & Thornburg benefited Road to Recovery, a local sober living home. The nonprofit received a donation of $3,065 to support its addiction recovery services. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🎨 After getting yellow paint splashed on his Jeep, a Fort Wayne resident is urging drivers to be cautious near street line painting crews. The city has added a second vehicle to follow paint trucks but reminds drivers to slow down and avoid driving over fresh lines. The resident was able to clean his car, but others may not have been as lucky. He suggests clearer warnings like cones to help prevent future incidents. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚓 A crash occurred around 9 p.m. on August 6 near the 6600 block of W Hamilton Rd S and Post Rd. First responders cleared the scene by 9:34 p.m. A broken fence and debris were visible, but no injuries have been confirmed. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🗺️ Indiana officials are weighing the possibility of redrawing congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. Gov. Mike Braun confirmed Vice President JD Vance will visit Indianapolis to discuss redistricting among other topics. Critics say the move is politically motivated and possibly unconstitutional, while supporters argue it could better reflect district voters. A special session only callable by the governor would be required to move forward. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚨 ICE arrests in Indiana have risen 80% in the past year, with nearly 1,400 people detained many without prior charges. The increase follows a January executive order from Gov. Mike Braun encouraging full cooperation with ICE. In Fort Wayne, local officers have assisted in at least two recent arrests. Some departments, like Noble County, have signed agreements with ICE, while Fort Wayne Police have not confirmed. Advocates warn the surge could impact families pursuing legal status. Camp Atterbury will be used to house detainees as enforcement expands statewide. Read more from WANE 15 here.

👮 Mayor Sharon Tucker announced a $250,000 Youth Violence Prevention Program using ARPA interest funds not taxpayer dollars to support local efforts reducing teen violence. Grants up to $10,000 will be awarded, with the Mayor’s Young Adult Council reviewing applications. The plan also includes curfew discussions, appointing Lewis King as FWPD’s community engagement manager, and calls for residents to volunteer and help build trust with youth. City Council will vote on the plan August 26. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🕵️ Fort Wayne police are investigating after a man was found dead in the road at Countryside Village mobile home park just before 5 a.m. on August 7. A motorist spotted the body near West Washington Center Road and Lima Road. The cause of death is unknown, and the Allen County Coroner and Prosecutor’s offices are assisting.
