📰News
👮 National Night Out returned to Fort Wayne Tuesday evening at Indian Trails Park. Hosted by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the event ran from 6–8 p.m. and featured SWAT gear displays, K9 demonstrations, a bike giveaway, and free food including 600 pork burgers, 400 hot dogs, and hundreds of ice cream servings. The event aimed to strengthen community ties and promote safety. Read more from WANE 15 here.
📚 Walmart and Meijer are rolling out school supply deals to make back-to-school shopping easier and more affordable. Walmart is offering prices lower than last year, with key items like folders for $0.25 and crayons for $0.50. Meijer has over 25 essentials priced at $1 or less, including $1.99 pencils and $2.49 binders. Teachers at Meijer can also get 15% off school and home office items. Plus, Meijer’s digital “school supply list” tool makes shopping even simpler. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🗳️ Northwest Allen County Schools (NACS) is moving forward with plans for a $12 million operating referendum, which will appear on the November 4 special election ballot. Superintendent Wayne Barker shared that only four staff members are permitted to speak about the referendum during school hours to keep communication factual and transparent. The goal is to inform the community without causing division. Public concerns about traffic on Baird Road near the new CTE center were also addressed, with traffic studies planned. A tax impact calculator and more resources are available on the NACS website. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏘️ Fort Wayne is getting a $12.591 million boost from a local income tax (LIT) supplemental distribution, Mayor Sharon Tucker announced Tuesday. The funds will go toward neighborhood-focused improvements like $2.2 million for street and sidewalk repairs, $1.86 million for new playgrounds at six parks, $1.524 million for lighting upgrades, and $1.185 million for public safety efforts. Other investments include alley improvements, Riverfront development, and the Connected Neighborhoods initiative. Funding will be introduced at the August 12 City Council meeting. ⚡ Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and Google have filed a joint contract aiming to ease power grid stress by reducing electricity use during peak hours. The agreement could help lower customer electric bills by cutting overall power demand. I&M says Google’s role makes them a “good grid partner.” The deal awaits approval from the Indiana Utilities Regulatory Commission. Meanwhile, the Citizens Action Coalition filed a petition, citing lack of transparency and urging oversight to ensure Google pays its fair share. Read more from WANE 15 here.
⚖️ Lamont Cooley, 23, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison and ordered to pay over $18,000 in restitution after a fatal stabbing at Promenade Park in January. Cooley claimed he acted to defend a woman, Brandi Summers, who was allegedly being harassed. Both were later implicated, with Summers sentenced in May to six years for assisting a criminal. 🔫 The Allen County Coroner ruled the deaths of two people found Sunday in northwest Fort Wayne as a homicide-suicide. Police responded to a home on Morrow Way near Franke Park and found 45-year-old Toni Lynn Ott and 47-year-old James Derek Moreno with gunshot wounds.
