📰News

🧹 Volunteers are invited to join the Trashy Thursdays cleanup at Eagle Marsh Gateway on August 7 from 10 a.m. to noon. The group will collect trash along Engle Road to help protect local wildlife. All supplies are provided. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Read more and RSVP here.

🍻 Little River Wetlands Project invites the community to Hop River Brewing Co. on August 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. for Volun-beering, a casual evening of volunteering and stewardship. The all-ages event features good food, drinks, and a chance to support local conservation efforts. Read more and RSVP here.

🌿 A nonprofit learning center in northwest Fort Wayne is seeking a plant-loving volunteer for regular visits through October. Tasks include pruning, weeding, and offering advice to keep the grounds beautiful. Tools are provided, and volunteers can schedule a quick tour to learn more. Read more and respond here.

🎄 The Sleigh the Heat Bar Crawl is coming to Fort Wayne's Fairfield Corridor, featuring stops at Wunderkammer Company, Packard Taphouse, Bravas, and Wonder Camera. Tickets are $50 for adults 21 and over. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🪖 A new Indiana limestone memorial was dedicated Saturday at the Veterans National Memorial Shrine and Museum in Fort Wayne to honor Gulf War veterans. The monument pays tribute to those who served in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield from 1990–1991, the first major U.S. military deployment since Vietnam. The museum is open select days weekly, with the memorial grounds accessible 24/7. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🎒 Organizations across Fort Wayne are helping teachers and students ahead of the school year. Summit City Climbing Co. is collecting classroom supplies for FWCS teachers through August 5. A $10,000 donation from Bargain Lane has already boosted the effort. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Lutheran Church donated supplies for every student at Washington Elementary, continuing a 10-year tradition of community support. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🌻 Alex Babich’s sunflower, Clover, now stands at 26′ 8″ and may reclaim the national record. Squirrels have damaged other flowers, but Clover is still growing. Final measurement will be in September. Read more from WANE 15 here.

💛 Three-year-old Eliana Carmona, who has battled retinoblastoma since infancy, now faces financial challenges as her insurance coverage ended after her father lost his job. Her ongoing care at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia is critical but costly up to $12,000 per visit. To help, Ambrosia Orchard is hosting a fundraiser Sunday starting at noon, featuring Mexican food and open to the public. Donations can also be made online. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🦁 The Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation and WANE 15 donated $2,500 to the Fort Wayne Zoo, one of the few U.S. zoos that receives no public funding. The donation will support animal care and the zoo’s mission as a private nonprofit. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🐶 Fort Wayne Police have arrested Newton Arnold in connection with an alleged dogfighting ring. He faces 14 counts of purchasing or possessing animals for fighting, possession of animal fighting paraphernalia, and illegal firearm possession. This follows Tuesday’s arrest of Trevel Bell, whose charges were upgraded to 10 counts of animal fighting and one paraphernalia charge. Twenty-two dogs and puppies were rescued and are now being cared for at a secure location by Humane World for Animals. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚓 Fort Wayne Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that damaged three homes on the 300 block of Killea Street early Thursday morning. No injuries were reported. Multiple bullets struck the homes, including one where children were sleeping. Police have no suspects or motive yet. Read more from WANE 15 here.
