🥩 Longhorn Steakhouse in Fort Wayne reopened after temporarily closing Monday when it failed a health inspection due to cockroaches. The Allen County Department of Health ordered the closure, and the restaurant worked with pest control to address the issue. A spokesperson said the results did not reflect the restaurant’s commitment to cleanliness and safety. The location on Lima Road was cleared by the health department and reopened by 3 p.m. Tuesday. 📅 Fort Wayne city offices will be closed on Monday, September 1, for Labor Day. There will be no garbage or recycling collection that day, and pickup will shift back one day for the rest of the week. City offices will resume regular hours on Tuesday, September 2. Read more from WFFT here.
🏐 For the first time in Indiana history, a high school volleyball game will be played outside on a football field. Carroll and Homestead’s girls teams will face off in the “Turf Takeover,” with first serve set for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The outdoor court was set up Monday, giving Carroll players a chance to practice on it. Coaches and players from both schools shared their excitement about the unique experience. Tickets are available, and players wearing their club volleyball t-shirt get in free. 🏫 Bishop Luers High School has launched the “Ignite the Spirit!” capital campaign with a goal of $11 million to revitalize its campus and Fort Wayne’s southeast side. The school has already raised $2.5 million through early donors and partners. Plans include renovating classrooms, building an auxiliary gym, and establishing an endowment through the Catholic Community Foundation of Northeast Indiana. Sixteen classrooms were updated over the summer, and gym construction is set to begin in spring 2026, finishing by summer 2027. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🛒 A rezoning petition has been filed for 1.33 acres at 6814 South Anthony Boulevard to change the site from residential (R3) to limited commercial (C2), allowing for a grocery store and restaurant. The property, currently home to VFW Post 10006, is near Fire Station 12 and Lutheran Life Villages. Applicant Zu Bein and Blessing Hands Home Care Agency LLC aim to reuse existing structures to improve access to goods and services while fitting the neighborhood’s character. A public hearing is set for September 8, 2025, with council review to follow. If denied, the land will remain residential. Read more from WFFT here.
⚖️ Bishop Luers High School and the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend filed new court documents denying all allegations in a lawsuit involving an alleged student-run child exploitation and porn scheme. The lawsuit, brought by parents of female students, claims some male students created and shared fake nude photos using the girls’ faces. The school and Diocese deny failing to take appropriate action and are requesting that the parents who filed the lawsuit publicly identify themselves. This marks their first official response to the allegations. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🔥 A barn caught fire Monday in Grabill, northeast of Fort Wayne. Fire crews from the Northeast and East Central departments responded to the 12000 block of Cuba Road with two fire trucks, a tanker engine, and an EMS truck on scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏠A Fort Wayne woman, Angie Harlan, was charged after hiding her missing son from FWPD and DCS. The boy, who was in foster care, was reported missing on August 17. Officers later found him under a bed at Harlan’s home after she repeatedly denied he was there. The boy said his mother locked him in a closet with a padlock, gave him a Pringles can to urinate in, and provided prescription pills that made him feel dizzy. Police confirmed the pills were Pregabalin and Hydroxyz HCL. Harlan also threatened a DCS agent and officers on scene. She faces multiple charges, including false informing, criminal confinement, intimidation, and several counts of neglect of a dependent. Read more from WANE 15 here.
