📰News
🎶 Carroll High School is mourning the loss of freshman student and Charger Pride Marching Band member, Kailyn Howard, who passed away Sunday after a medical emergency. Principal Cleve Million shared condolences to the family and encouraged the community to support one another. Counseling and mental health resources have been offered, while the marching band held a memorial circle Tuesday. Students honored Kailyn by wearing pink, her favorite color. A GoFundMe has been set up to assist with funeral expenses. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚧 The westbound lane of Rothman Road, between Wheelock Road and Balaton Cove, will be closed Friday and Saturday, August 22–23. Flaggers will direct traffic during the closure, which is tied to a new private development project (not a city project). The City of Fort Wayne Public Works Division shared the update to help drivers plan ahead. Read more from WFFT here.
🎭 The 17th annual Taste of the Arts Festival returns to Fort Wayne on Saturday, August 23. The festival will feature more than 70 performances of dance, music, and theater across nine stages, along with the HeART of the City Market showcasing 40 Indiana creatives. Artists from the Paint It Fresh! Plein Air Competition will also sell their work. Families can enjoy the NIPSCO STEAM Park, where kids can explore science, technology, art, and math. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Art Campus Fort Wayne. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏈 The Indianapolis Colts are teaming up with Fort Wayne nonprofit Courageous Healing to fight the stigma around mental health. Founded by Aaron and Janelle Lane in 2014, the group focuses on culturally centered, trauma-informed therapy, especially for Black and brown communities. This partnership is part of the Colts’ “Kicking the Stigma” initiative, launched in 2020 by the late owner Jim Irsay. The team has committed more than $32 million to mental health efforts, including $800,000 awarded to 18 organizations in 2025. The collaboration will include community events, outreach, and campaigns encouraging open conversations about mental health. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏙️ Fort Wayne City Council has approved changes to the tax abatement scoring system to attract higher-paying jobs and greater investment. The minimum salary the city will reward is now $39,000, with stronger emphasis on jobs over $47,000. The rubric, which scores businesses on investment and job creation, has been adjusted to weigh wages more heavily. Companies must earn between 20 and 100 points to qualify for 3- to 10-year abatements. The new system eliminates alternate schedules and updates both real property (like buildings and land) and personal property (like equipment) rules. City leaders hope the changes will grow the tax base and support sustainable city services. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🏥 Lutheran Health Network has launched online scheduling for screening mammograms to make preventive care more accessible. Dr. Patrick Holly, medical director of Lutheran Health Physicians, emphasized that mammograms can detect cancer before symptoms appear. Screenings take less than 30 minutes and could be lifesaving. The American College of Radiology recommends yearly mammograms starting at age 40 for women at average risk, and earlier assessments for women with higher risk factors, such as family history. Women can now conveniently schedule their appointments through Lutheran Health Network’s website. Read more from WFFT here.
🏡 A new 323-home subdivision called Bella Coves is planned near Cook Road and Goshen Road (U.S. 33), close to Kuehnert Dairy Farm and the Amazon Fulfillment Center. Plans include townhomes, market-rate homes, and affordable single-family houses, plus new roads, subdivision connections, and stormwater ponds. A public hearing is scheduled Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Allen County Plan Commission. Read more from WFFT here.
🛵 One man died after a motorcycle crash Wednesday evening in northeast Allen County. The crash happened around 5:50 p.m. in the 7400 block of Milan Center Road, where a motorcyclist struck a mailbox and several trees. A bystander and officers performed CPR, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time. Investigators say speeding caused the crash, which remains under investigation. Read more from WANE 15 here.
🚔 A Fort Wayne man is wanted for aggravated battery and criminal recklessness after a July 6 shooting on Weisser Park Avenue. Prosecutors have charged 32-year-old Demetre D. Payton, accused of shooting a woman multiple times, including once in the mouth, following a dispute over a Facebook post. The victim suffered severe lip, jaw, and dental injuries, as well as wounds to her hand, finger, and bicep that required surgery. Witnesses identified Payton, known as “Popeye” on social media, as the shooter. As of Thursday evening, he had not been booked into Allen County Lockup. Read more from WANE 15 here.
