👶 A new Safe Haven Baby Box has opened at Fire Station 3 in southwest Allen County, located at 12912 Indianapolis Road. The box provides a safe, legal way for parents in crisis to surrender infants and helps reduce the risk of abandonment. Indiana now has 148 of the nation’s 365 Baby Boxes, with adoptions coordinated through the Department of Family Services. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🐾 The YLNI Farmers Market on Barr Street has a new “Mayor of the Market” — Bucky, an 8-year-old Corgi. Bucky won the 2025 election against 28 other candidates with the campaign slogan, “a bone in every bowl and a ball in every yard.” A longtime market visitor, he now sports a Mayor sash, a new water bowl, and plenty of treats. WANE 15’s Pat Hoffman even served as his unofficial campaign manager. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🔥 The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum received approval Friday from County Commissioners for $200,000 in emergency repairs after its 20-year-old fire alarm system began sending false signals in July. Johnson Controls, the original installer, will update and replace the outdated panel without a public bidding process due to the urgency. General Manager Melanie Carney said the new system should last 20–30 years, with work starting immediately and expected to be completed within weeks. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚗 The Goddard School of Fort Wayne surprised their custodian, Bobby, with a car after learning he relied on public transportation for his long commute. Staff and families began fundraising, and the Fazlic family stepped in to donate the car. Bobby was also given a $935 check from the remaining funds raised. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Bobby said he loves working at the school and thanked everyone for their generosity. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚒 Bierman Autism Centers hosted a free sensory-friendly touch-a-truck event on Saturday, August 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Families enjoyed exploring fire trucks, police vehicles, and even meeting Cars character Lightning McQueen. The community was invited to attend with registration encouraged at the Bierman Autism Center on Coldwater Road. Read more from WANE 15 here.

💍 Fort Wayne drag queen Della Licious, also known as Branden Blaettner, officiated a mass wedding for LGBTQ+ couples Saturday at After Dark Nightclub. The event marked 10 years since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide and came days after former Kentucky clerk Kim Davis petitioned the Court to overturn the ruling. Blaettner emphasized the importance of protecting marriage rights, noting the Respect for Marriage Act of 2022 requires recognition of same-sex and interracial marriages even if the Court revisits the issue. Couples who participated had their marriage license costs reimbursed thanks to support from the Greater Allen County UAW CAP council. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚔 The Fort Wayne Police Department is increasing patrols and sobriety checkpoints as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign ahead of Labor Day. Lieutenant Tony Maze emphasized that impaired driving is illegal and deadly, urging drivers to partner with law enforcement to keep roads safe. In Indiana, about 14% of fatal crashes in 2024 were linked to drunk driving, and more than 35% involved drug impairment. FWPD reminds residents to plan ahead for a sober ride and to call police if they suspect an impaired driver. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚧 A crash involving a semi tractor and trailer hauling a windmill blade caused major traffic delays Saturday afternoon at the I-469 and US 30 interchange east of New Haven.
