📰News

🏃‍♂️ At its Race the Game event during Wednesday’s TinCaps game, Fort4Fitness revealed the shirts and medals for its Fall Festival races: green for the 13.1-mile, red for the 10K, and blue for the 4-mile. Attendees could run 70 laps around the concourse to complete a marathon distance before the game ended. This year also adds a new Pace Chase 5K, where runners compete against their own projected time. Those interested in registering for any of the races, including the Pace Chase 5K, can sign up here and here. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🦁 Indiana Tech’s mascot, Maximus, revealed a new look in a playful three-minute video featuring IT president Karl Einolf. The clip shows the two searching for free cookies but stumbling upon transformative powers instead. 📖 The Allen County Public Library offers a range of resources for students, educators, and families, starting with free library cards available in person or online. New in 2025, Student Library Cards issued through select schools give access to books, test prep, and language learning tools. Programs are held most days, and online resources like Mango and Udemy offer language, business, and personal development courses. Educators can access special services, and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library has delivered over 50,000 free books to kids under five in Allen County. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🗳️ The Allen County Election Board will hold its first public meeting Friday on a proposal to replace 111 precinct-based polling locations with 39 vote centers for the 2026 election. Data on voter registration, turnout, location size, accessibility, and traffic flow was studied by an 8-member bipartisan committee. Both Democratic and Republican leaders support the idea, citing convenience and lower staffing costs, though Democrats raised concerns about accessibility for rural voters and potential long lines. Examples from other counties show varying ratios of vote centers to voters. Leaders agree the plan must be done right ahead of a busy 2026 ballot. Read more from WANE 15 here.

📚 All Allen County districts saw improvement in third-grade IREAD reading scores. Northwest Allen County Schools achieved a 94% pass rate, up from 89.9%, with Arcola and Cedar Canyon elementaries reaching 100% and Aspen Meadow at 99%. Fort Wayne Community Schools scored 82.5%, marking five years of growth and surpassing pre-pandemic levels, with Irwin and Croninger elementaries at 100%. The event honors late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler, known for his commitment to combating homelessness and supporting the military. Players and staff volunteered at The Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, and Treasure Staff. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏥 Indiana Governor Mike Braun said the state’s hospitals have some of the highest costs in the nation and “we can do better.” He introduced Gloria Sachdev as Indiana’s first Secretary of Health and Family Services, citing her record in lowering healthcare costs and banning “facility fees” at off-campus sites. Advocacy groups expect her appointment to keep reducing hospital, drug, and insurance costs a priority. Braun said hospitals now control about half of healthcare spending through ownership of medical practices and urged transparency, competition, and entrepreneurship to lower costs. 🕊️ Five local high school students in the Peacemakers program, part of Alive Community Outreach, shared personal experiences with youth violence and how it motivates them to work toward prevention. Stories included losing family members, witnessing rising violence, and learning the importance of peace, forgiveness, and making better choices.
