🪲 The Big Bugabaloo is back at the Fort Wayne Zoo with eleven giant animatronic insects now in Central Zoo and Australia. Kids can climb on a Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar, join a $3 scavenger hunt for prizes, and meet real bugs through the zoo’s education team. New this year is a Bug Day Camp on Sept. 6 and Sept. 20 for kids ages 4 through 4th grade, teaching the vital role bugs play in ecosystems. Displays run through Sept. 28. Click here to register. 📚 Starting Sept. 8, visitors to the Allen County Public Library’s main branch in downtown Fort Wayne will get up to three hours of free parking in the underground garage and surrounding lots on Webster, Harrison, and Wayne Streets. The change, delayed from Aug. 18, follows repeated vandalism, mechanical issues, and traffic backups with the old gated system. Parking is free only for library visitors; others pay $1/hour with a $7 daily max. ABM Industries will manage enforcement. Parking at other branches remains free. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🐱 Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (FWACC) and Black Forest Cat Café celebrated their partnership nearing 1,000 cat adoptions since the café opened in June 2022. Averaging one or two adoptions a day, the shop marked the milestone with $5 cat lounge admissions and $5 adoptions all week, plus a pop-up kitten event on Aug. 13 where visitors had a strong chance of adopting the 1,000th cat. The café also plans to expand its cat lounge and add new lunch menu items. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🏈 Parents of Snider High School football players claim six athletes were hospitalized after practicing in extreme heat over the weekend, including doing “10x10” workouts. One parent said their son’s arms became swollen and stiff, but he was told to continue playing until being sent to the ER Monday. Fort Wayne Community Schools says they are investigating and working with families, urging precautions during high temperatures. Read more from WANE 15 here.

Fort4Fitness hosted its annual Race the Game at Parkview Field on Wednesday, Aug. 13, during the TinCaps vs. West Michigan Whitecaps matchup. Teams worked together to run a marathon distance before the final out. Fans with game tickets joined by meeting along the third base line past the climbing wall after gates opened at 5:35 p.m. Perks included a free cinch bag for the first 50 sign-ups, race discounts, and the 2025 Fall Festival shirt reveal. 🚰 City Utilities presented a $44 million, 5-year plan to Fort Wayne City Council to replace aging water mains, upgrade sewers, and improve stormwater drainage. Priorities include replacing 23 water mains with the most breaks, completing 60 miles of sewer pipe lining, and tackling 50 large stormwater projects. Cost-saving measures have already reduced expenses by millions, but average monthly bills could still rise slightly. Some council members, including President Russ Jehl, opposed the plan, citing a lack of confidence in leadership. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🛣 Governor Mike Braun said no funding solution has broad support yet for converting U.S. 30 into a limited access freeway, but emphasized the need to find one. Indiana’s gas tax falls short, and Braun rejected tolling U.S. 30, suggesting public/private partnerships like Steel Dynamics’ $25 million commitment and land donation could help. Safety concerns and congestion remain key issues along the route. Read more from WANE 15 here.

🚓 Police, firefighters, and medics responded to State Boulevard Wednesday morning after reports of a man sitting on a bridge railing near Wells Street, threatening to jump. A crisis response team persuaded the young adult to come down safely around 11:30 a.m., and he was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation. Traffic, shut down between Wells and Clinton streets, reopened by noon. Read more from WANE 15 here.
